Philosophy

Written by Ashley. 1 comment Posted in: Uncategorized

Currently in my English class we’re reading a philosophical novel.  A fictional book about philosophy.  It’s called Sophie’s World.  It has a kind of weird story line so far, we’re still trying to figure it out, but the philosophy part of it is really in depth.  But at the same time it’s sort of easy to understand.

The book was written by a Norwegian Philosophy professor.  He and his students weren’t really liking the textbook so, he decided to write a novel for his class.  I am really glad that we’re reading this book rather than a textbook.

I’d never really given much thought to a philosophical way of thinking before.  I had been taught at home, in Sunday school that God has the whole wide world in His hands and that He made it all.  I never really thought about where God came from.  He was just almighty and therefore didn’t need a creator.  Not that I’m questioning my faith, but this book has really gotten me thinking.  The book asks you questions like, “Who are you?”  How in the world are you supposed to answer that.  Then it asks, “Where does the world come from?”  I thought that was an easy one at first.  I answered God made it.  Even the girl in the book starts with that as her answer.  But then she thinks, “where does God come from?”  “Did God create Himself before he was created?” The thing that all the kids in my class are realizing is that, there isn’t one simple answer to these questions.  Some people spend their whole lives trying to answer maybe just even one of these questions.

I was also surprised to find how closed my mind was.  At first I saw other kids saying that the world came from the Big Bang.  I just shook my head and chuckled to myself thinking that they were so wrong, so off course.  But then our teacher reminded us that, we have to play the “believing game”, or open our minds  to what these philosophers were saying.  We had to pretend that we agreed with them almost.  We had to let go of the narrow mindedness of what we’d been thinking, and been taught for almost our whole lives.

Reading this book has been a really great experience and I can’t wait to finish it!

Hello world!

I have had a few blogs before.  I made one when I was about 8 or 9 maybe I was 10.  But I posted little to nothing on it.  After about 2 or 3 years, I forgot the password to get on.  So I made a new one.  That second blog had was no more successful then its predecessor.  I was posting things about once a week during the summer but after school started it just died out.

I’m hoping that by starting up a blog during the school year, I can post more often.  :)
